Environmental Protection: Man and Nature.

Theme of the lesson: Environmental Protection: Man and Nature.
Objectives: to revise and practice the vocabulary on the topic
to develop pupils’ unprepared speech and listening skills
to develop pupils’ attention and creation
to make the pupils learn how to solve the problem of environmental
protection
to teach pupils to work in groups
The procedure of the lesson:
T: Good morning everyone! I mean you, pupils and our highly respected guests. I want you to watch the video clip of the song.( the video clip of the song “ The Earth Song “ by Michael Jackson is shown).Can you name the theme of our lesson? Yes, the theme of our lesson is “Ecological Problems: Man and Nature”. Look at the blackboard. What associations with the word do you have ?

(Suggested answers: animals, plants, the air we breathe, the water we drink, forests, the soil on which we stand and walk, what is around us etc.)
T: Of course, these are all parts of the environment. Nowadays people understand how important it is to solve the environmental problems that is ecological problems.Let’s revise the active vocabulary on the theme. Your task: Read the meaning and guess the word.(Cards are given to the pupils )
Card #1
– The scientific study of the natural relations of plants, animals, people to each other and their surroundings. (Ecology).
– The act of making (air, water, land) dangerously impure. (Pollution).
– Too many people in one place. (Overcrowding).
– The act of destroying, putting an end to the existence of sоmething. (Destruction).
– The act of throwing things away untidily. (Littering).
– Plants, animals, people. (Living things).
– The natural home of a plant or animal. (Habitat).
T: Good job! The next task . Could you read the poem and tell me: 1. What the most serious ecological problems are mentioned in it. 2. What the phrase “ change to green “ means ?
(Pupils work in pairs )
The poem:
Rub your eyes and look around,
Litter lying on the ground,
Bottles, cans and polythene-
Take the tip and change to green!
Forests going up in smoke,
Cities fit to make you choke,
Nowhere left to be that”s clean-
Take a breath and change to green
Animals and plants have died,
People starve to feed our pride,
For the life that might have been
Take a stand and change to green!
There is so much that is not right,
It could get you well uptight,
So make a start and change the scene-
The lights are flashing- change to green!

( Suggested answers: 1. Littering, air pollution, disappearing animals and plants, etc.2. Many flowers and animals have become rare and vanish. Our useful insects can’t live in the atmosphere of chemicals and pesticides. Radiation and transport are harmful to people and animals. The progress of science has caused global disasters. When air, soil or water becomes dirty , we say it is polluted. It is very dangerous for us. We must save our planet.)
T: Well done. Thank you.There are cards with the numbers of groups. Choose the card and join the group you’ ll work in.(The class is divided into 3 groups. Each group receives the text. The 1st group- “ Water Pollution “, the 2nd- “Ozone holes “, the 3d- “Disposing of the garbage “.)
T: Your task is to read and understand the text. Then choose 1 speaker. The speaker of the 1st group retells the text to the 2nd group, the speaker of the 2nd group retells the text to the 3d group and the speaker of the 3d group- to the 1st group. Each group should find out the problem and describe it using pictures, schemes and so on.
Water pollution (the text for group 1)
Water is necessary for life on the Earth. It is in oceans, seas, lakes and rivers. But very little water on the Earth is good for drinking because it is dirty. Some factories and companies dump chemical wastes, millions of tons of oil into the sea every year. We can only imagine how many seabirds and animals, fish, shellfish die in such water.The Caspian Sea, the Aral Sea, Lake Baikal and other water-bodies are in danger now. It is dangerous to walk barefoot on the banks of our rivers and to swim in our lakes because there is a lot of garbage, broken glass, and plastic, tins, and bottles, thrown everywhere. Some people wash their cars, bicycles in our rivers and lakes,The Aral Sea was the fourth largest lake in the world. The former sea bed is now a salt desert. It was a home to 24 species of fish. As the result of the shrinkage of the Sea a lot of fishermen lost their jobs. The dying Aral Sea has changed the climate of the region .A lot of people suffer from it

Ozone holes (the second group)
In the atmosphere there is the ozone layer. It protects the Earth from the ultraviolet rays of the sun, like a kind of a roof. But the ozone layer is destroyed by aerosol sprays, space flights. So the dangerous rays get through the atmosphere, causing skin cancer and other diseases. We must stop using sprays right now. To make air clean we need good filters at nuclear power stations, at factories and plants and also in cars and buses. Many territories and our atmosphere are polluted with different kinds of technological, chemical, nuclear wastes. The intensive development of sciences, industry and chemistry nowadays has made the pollution of our environment a global problem which should be solved by all means. Deforestation can also add greenhouse’s gas in the air. When the trees are cut down, the forest becomes a desert. The homes of millions of animals and plants are destroyed, too. If only people took care of the environment and one another, they would never need any medical aid.

Disposing of the garbage (the third group)
Disposing the garbage we produce every day is a major problem. Finding land for new landfills is becoming more difficult nowadays. But there are 3 R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle. Energy, water, glass bottles, newspapers, plastic, cans, tins can be reduced, reused and recycled. In some families kitchen and garden trash is easily burnt. The old furniture, clothing and other useful things are cleaned, repaired or given away to people who need them. Some people can make wonderful vases of plastic bottles, cans and painted paper. It helps to save energy, money and to protect the environment and our precious natural resources. We should build factories for utilizing solid wastes .Everything is connected in the world and we can save the planet from the ecological crisis only acting all together.
T: Discuss your problems in a role play “Journalist’s interview “.( pupils ask questions on the problems )
T: Have you ever thought of your future? Do you think the people of tomorrow will be happier than we are
T: I shall read you a sentence. If it is optimistic raise your red card, if it is pessimistic – a grey one (before the lesson pupils receive cards of two colours).
1. In future people will live longer, many diseases will disapper
2. People will cut down all the forests.
3. There will be no fish in the rivers.
4. We shall be able to control the weather.
5. We shall not be able to breathe without a gas mask on.
6. We shall exhaust all the resources.
7. There won’t be any conflicts between people.
8. We shall find new sources of energy.
T: What can we do to keep the Earth clean and healthy? We should be friends to her. Let’s listen to a song “ Imagine “ by John Lenon.
T: I want you to continue these words:
If you want the life be cool,
Like a full of colour picture,
Don’t forget one golden rule: ( care of nature )
