TEACHING VOCABULARY STRATEGY НП ЦО «Лицей «Столичный» Логвиненко Елена Валерьевна Астана Building vocabulary is one of the most basic forms of learning any language, not just English. Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) requires: Patience energy strategy creativity As Confucius said I hear and I forget I see and I remember I do and I understand Principles of ESL There are three principles of ESL that you can focus on in learning vocabulary with your students : practice, understanding inference (вывод). Teaching Approach Communicative approach Communicative approach is emphasized as an appropriate method in learning new vocabulary. Students are motivated and interested to get involved in communicative situations. The students will be given the opportunity to communicate. This is one of the good advantages for students to acquire new words in a practical and proficient way. Teaching Vocabulary Methods Translation Translation is an effective technique when translating students something that they do not understand, from English language to L1 or vice-versa. This is more appropriate for students who are beginners and is occasionally used for students of intermediate or advanced level of English. This technique helps teachers to emphasize new structures, specifically in terms of accuracy. Building Vocabulary Through Reading Another technique that teachers can use is to help students to use new words in context. Use this kind of method to help students find the meaning of words while reading a text. The important is that teachers should make sure that students are aware of how words fit into sentences and how to use them, and not just to know their meaning and pronunciation. The Total Physical Response Method of Vocabulary Building Younger children – kindergarten through elementary – benefit most from kinesthetic approaches to language building. One such method is called total physical response (TRP). TPR relies on pairing speech and action. TPR typically integrates the active use of music, poems, finger plays, games, choral reading and other activities to encourage and support vocabulary development. For example, young children more easily learn the names of the days of the week and the months of the year when those words are put to simple tunes. While the total physical response method of introducing and building vocabulary is most often used with young children, it can also be used quite effectively with older students and even adult learners in appropriate and fun contexts. PPP Technique Firstly, the teacher presents the new word, an event which involves the presentation of pronunciation and spelling, all in context. Next the teacher allows the students to practice the new word in a controlled setting, making sure the student has understood it properly. Third is the production stage, where there is less-controlled practice and an informal assessment of learning whereby the students get chance to use the new word in an original way, to relate it to their knowledge and experiences. These three stages help the student to consolidate the new word in their mental vocabulary bank. There are seven recognized learning styles Combining different methods is the best way to make sure that all your students learn new English words. The Learning Styles theory is an important tool for educators showing why different students benefit from different teaching methods. Visual Aural Verbal Physical Logical Social Solitary Types of the word When we talk about vocabulary, we usually mean words, but what is a word? Most people think of words as single units, such as cat, dozen, or reluctant. However, these single words are merely one part of the vocabulary load that our students face. In fact, a “word” can be one of five types a single word, a set phrase, a variable phrase, a phrasal verb, an idiom. What should I teach when I introduce a new word Any time you introduce a new word make sure you are teaching the following: The meaning The sound The written words New Words Introduction stage 1 Pointing Substitution Naming Miming and Total Physical Response Realia New Words Practice stage 2 different activities New Words Production Stage 3 Give students to personalize Make up sentences Answer the questions Dialogue Role play Storytelling Drama Games Writing Projects New Words Control Stage 4 Tests Dictations Teachers should decrease Looking up definitions as a single source of word knowledge Asking students to write sentences for new words before they have studied the word in depth Did you know that a student needs to encounter a new word 10 to 16 times to effectively "learn" it according to recent research? The Main Motto in Class is "Recognition, Repetition, Reproduction | |
