Introduction II. Main stage 1. Teacher’s word about English and American literature, about reading, its aims. The world of books is full of wonders. Reading books you can find yourself in different lands, countries, seas, oceans. Together with the characters of the book you go by ship in the stormy sea, you climb high mountains, you fly into space, you have a lot adventures. By reading we develop our imagination, logical thinking and broaden the outlook, the value of books is undeniable. 2. Listen to the sonnet 29 by Shakespeare. Let 2 students to recite the sonnet and its Russian version. 3.Quiz “The world of English and American literature”. Each student takes the card prepared by the teacher where the useful information is given. The aim is to guess the writer. 1. Famous American writer, Real name –Samuel Clemens ,the best known for his book ”The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” 2. The articles in it are arranged in alphabetical order. 4.Crime D. a piece of writing in which the words are carefully chosen for the images and ideas they suggest, and in which the sounds of the words when read aloud often follow a particular rhythmic pattern 5.Tragedy E. a movie, play, or book that is intentionally amusing and funny either in its characters or its action. 6.Comedy F. the type of book or story that is written about imaginary characters and events and does not describe real people or deal with facts, or a false report or statement that you pretend is true 7.Drama G. Elicit answers from students. Answers Marlin, open sea, cloudless sky, sun (therefore tropical?) Background information Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) received the Nobel prize for literature in 1954. Born in Chicago, USA, he spent some time in Europe as a journalist in the 1920s. He also lived in Spain for a while, and was passionate about bull-fighting. His other great love was deep-sea fishing, which is the subject of The Old Man and the Sea. In later life, he lived mostly in Cuba, and this is where the story is set. Ex 2 p 114 Ask students what they know about Ernest Hemingway or tell them a little about his life. Then ask students to read the three reviews and summarise what they learn from them. Answers It is a short story; it is economically written; it is about an old man fishing with a line. Ex 3 p 114 Refer students to the Exam spot and stress that they do not need to understand every word in a difficult text. Then ask them to skim the extract. III.
