Grade 10A Theme: VOCABULARY REVIEW Aims of the lesson: This lesson is used to review a vocabulary list. These words were taken from Unit in the «The Headway Advanced», book from Oxford English. Activities have been adapted to correlate with the unit. All the following activities can easily be developed for any unit or book. The main Purpose of this lesson is to promote critical thinking and prepare the student for a future vocabulary test. Sample Vocabulary List 1. Amethyst Аметист 2. Bloated раздутый 3. Сircumstance обстоятельства 4. Defiant вызывающий 5. Deformed деформировать 6. Enamored влюблен 7. Hideous уродливый 8. Magnificent великолепный 9. Mar портить 10. Mock высмеивать 11. Wrinkled морщить Warm-up, Activity One: 5 minute; Two Truths and a lie Put the students into groups of 2 or 3. The groups make up a list or two true statements about the story «The picture of Dorian Gray», and one false statement. Allow the groups 5 minutes to prepare and then test each other. A group presents their two truths and a lie and the rest of the class tells which are true and which are false. Activity Two: 20 minutes; Dictation of Vocabulary This activity is useful the students become more comfortable with the dictation part of the test and judge overall comprehension. After the students write the word they also translate it into Russian. This work is not usually checked in class but serves as a self-monitoring method. The more motivated students will do a self-check at home. If you feel that immediate assessment is needed, you may do a spot check with one or two students. Activity Three: 5 minutes; around the world Using a set of flashcards, have the class split into two groups or teams. Everyone is standing in line. First show the word in Russian, the first student to translate the word correctly into to English sits down. The line that everyone sits down first is the winner. Activity Four: 5 minutes; Odd one out Put five words on the board that are from the unit you are studying. Have the students pick the words that are similar or synonyms. Deformed, mock, hideous, bloated, tuck Answer: deformed, hideous and bloated are will words that describe something with a bad or unpleasant appearance Activity Five: 5 minutes; Synonyms and antonyms race Use the flashcards again for this race game. Have each team name a Synonym or antonym for each word. The teams will alternate. One will have the synonym of the word while the other will have to tell an antonym. The team with most correct answers wins. Activity Six: 5 minutes; True/False Chair Using a piece of paper with the word true on one side and false on the other ask the teams questions about a story or meanings of vocabulary words. At the end of the lesson, count all of the points for the two teams and award the winning team some sort of prize. Candy or may be extra credit points for the upcoming vocabulary test. The prize is up to you and it gives the students a reason to play hard. And in this case, the class period they just spent playing games was really a review and comprehension check for you. | |
