Don’t cry. (The cry stops). Scene 2 Narrator 3: Fifteen years later. Tom Canty is still the poorest of the poor. He and his family were paupers. Tom Canty’s father didn’t want to work. He and his wife and his mother and his three children all lived in one room in an old house in the poorest part of London. Canty never did any work: every day he sent out his three children to beg for money in the street. (The light is off and then it is moved to the right corner. The Cantys family is still on the stage. The father is at the table, reading a paper and pointing to the children with the rude face. The mother is busy cleaning the room and setting the table. The children leave the stage and then appear again. Tom, Bet, Nan came home from the street. They were dirty and hungry.) Tom: Good evening Father, we didn’t get any money. People are afraid of us and they don’t want to give us a penny. (He shows empty pockets) John Canty (stands up and looks at his children angrily) What did you say silly boy? You didn’t bring money? You’ll get a good beating and your sisters too! Bet Canty (falls on her knees): No Father, please. We are tired and we want to eat something. John Canty (takes some food from the table, shows to the children and bites a piece): What? Are you hungry? No food for you today! You didn’t bring money therefore I will give you no food. No money-no food! (And he moves the food far from them) Nan( is trying to stop him) But Father, it is not good to harm your children. (The mother is standing near the table and crying) Narrator 4 (in the left corner): In the opposite part of London, in Westminster Palace Edward, the Prince of Wales lived happily with his family. His father, Henry VIII, didn’t feel well and if he died Edward could become the King of England. (Edward sits impatiently on the bench, books are on his knees. Lord Hertford is walking back and forward acting as his teaching the Prince a lesson. Then he turns and faces the audience.) Lord Hertford: Please, Your Highness, you must keep your attention on the matters of state. Now concerning the French ambassador’s appointment with you this afternoon- Edward: (stands up and interrupts the Lord) I don’t care to see the French ambassador this afternoon. Or any afternoon next week. (He wants to leave him) Or any other day. Tell him not to come. (Queen the mother joins the conversation) Queen : My dear son, you know your Father, the King, is seriously ill, after his death you will take his place as the King. Edward (goes back to the bench, throws the books) I don’t want to be the King. I am a boy. I want to have my childhood. (Leaves the room , goes to the right corner) ( Queen and the Lord continue the conversation) Lord Hertford: I am very sorry Your Majesty. I shouldn’t have mentioned this visit at all. Queen: It is not your fault. Edward has to understand that it is his destiny, nothing can be changed. Scene3 The light is on. Narrator 5 appears from the left. The light is going from Narrator 5 to the center. Narrator5: Tom and Edward were unhappy because they dreamed about impossible things- Tom wanted to be a prince, when Edward wanted to know what it was like to be a boy. Tom’s neighbor, Father Andrew taught him about kings and princes, he inspired him to visit the Palace and meet the Prince. (Father Andrew is walking by with a book in his hands. Tom goes from the right corner to meet him in the center) Tom: Father Andrew, I want to talk to you. I need your help. Father Andrew: Yes, my boy, how can I help you? Tom : I want to learn how to read and write. I want to be like a Prince. Father Andrew : Tom, I will teach you how to speak nicely and how to be like a prince. I will also teach you Latin. Here, try to read this- (He passes him his book but Tom pushes the book from him and says) Tom : I want to meet the Prince. Where can I find him? Father Andrew: You should go to Westminster Palace; there you will see the Prince. (Two happily leave the stage. The curtains are closed) Scene 4 Narrator 6: One day, he wandered here and there in the city, hardly noticing where he was going, or what was happening around him. By-and-by he found himself near Westminster Palace, the sign and symbol of English royalty. Was the desire of his soul to be satisfied at last? Here, indeed, was a king's palace. Might he not hope to see a prince now--a prince of flesh and blood, if Heaven were willing? (Poor little Tom, in his rags, approached to the gates and tried to catch a sight through) Guard (appears on the stage and throws Tom away from the gate): Mind your manners, beggar! Prince (comes out and says very loudly): Guard! How dare you treat a poor boy like that! Open the gates, and let him in! Guard : At once, your Highness. (The curtains are opened) Prince : Come with me, you look hungry. (They are coming in to Edward’s room) Narrator 7: Prince and Tom spent a lot of time in the grandest room of Edward. Tom told him about his Father who didn’t want to work and always beat the children. Edward shared his boring, colorless life with Tom. He truly wanted to play games, laugh, do nothing but be with other boys. (The boys are sitting on the sofa and talking to each other. Tom shows him his scars and tells about his games. Edward shows the books and lots of paper near his sofa). Prince (stands up and says very seriously): Say no more, I will spend just one day dressed in your clothes and you will be in mine. (The Prince and Tom changed their clothes. Tom stays in the room, when Edward leaves the Palace). The display goes down and the picture of a street appears. Music 1 is on, the boys appear and boy 1 starts dancing. The Music is over; the second boy performs his dance. Then the prince approaches to them. They are busy watching the dance, so they don’t see the prince. Then one boy notices the prince.) Boy 2: Look, here is our poor prince. (Pointing the prince and stopping the music) Edward: How dare you to talk to me like that; I am the King of England. Boy1: Well, if you are the King of England than I am Lord Hertford. Prince: I order you to stop laughing. This noble man is my uncle. Boy2 : Yeah, and you live in Westminster Palace and you have a bath and your own room. (Laughing and bowing at the same time) Boy3 : I think he is sick; we should help him to find his home. Poor boy. (The boys take Edward to Canty’s place.they go to the right corner. Scene 5 The display goes up. Tom is sitting in the room and looking through the books. Then he stands near the mirror.) Narrator 8 : (on the left) Tom Canty, left alone in the prince's cabinet, made good use of his opportunity. He turned himself this way and that before the great mirror. He admired his new look. Next he drew the beautiful sword, and bowed, kissing the blade, and laying it across his breast, as a noble knight did. (Some books fell from the sofa when he tried to take the sword. He stops acting like a prince and starts collecting the books dusting them before placing them back on their place. The maid enters the room.) Maid ( She is on her knees helping him ): Your Highness, what are you doing? You shouldn’t clean your room. It is my job to do it. Tom : I am not Your Highness; I am just a boy, a pauper. (Shocked) Maid : Your Highness, you are not feeling well, I shall call your sister Lady Jane. (She stands up and leaves the room crying and screaming that the prince is sick, he is mad) Lady Jane : (enters the room from the right) My dear brother, I have heard that you are not well today. I understand. All this stress. Dad is weak and soon you will become a King. (She wants to face him, but Tom is afraid of her. He quickly moves into another part of the room). Tom: I am not sick, and I am not going to be a King. (And he runs from the room. Lady Jane leaves the room crying.) Scene 6 (The light is off. The sad and gloomy music is on. The curtains are closed.) Narrator 9 : All this while the little King had been alternately quaking with terror and trembling with hope. The world of poverty and cruelty surrounded him. The paupers were angry, rude and always hungry. Tom’s family wasn’t an exception: John Canty spent days and nights at home doing nothing but drinking and scolding his children, wife and his mother. Edward didn’t like it; he wanted to change it somehow. One day he asked people from his neighborhood to teach John Canty a lesson. (The light is on, the curtains are opened. The crowd of people with Edward comes to John Canty. In the dark corner John Canty cries his children’s names, walks as a drunken man and throws everything on his way. Children are quiet; they sit far from him and try not to breath). Edward : Dad our neighbors are here to talk to you. Neighbor 1 : You must stop it John Canty. Neighbor’s wife: Your children deserve a better life. A Nobel Man: Here is an order of our King. (He reads the order). People who do not work and mistreat others ought to be placed in prison. (The curtains are closed.) Scene 7 Narrator 10: Several months passed since that day. John Canty found some work. Edward was proud of him and happy for Tom’s sisters. (John Canty is going home with a heavy bag in his hands. The children see him and run to meet him. He gives each a present and a new scarf for his wife. Edward is proud of him. He pats him on the shoulder. Scene 8 (The crowd of people joins the Cantys. The gloomy music is on again. The curtains are opened. No light is there on the stage. The people gather near the Castel (built from the squares). Tom is on the balcony. The Queen, Lady –Jane, Lord Hertford are watching him. The light is on.) Narrator 11 : But in the Palace everything is dark and gloomy. The King died and today Edward is to be introduced to the people of England. Lady Jane’s friend : Poor King. Edward should be more serious. (The crowd of people is near the Castle. Tom’s mother sees the son and points him) Tom’s mom : Look it is my boy, my son. (Edward is near Tom’s mother to support her). Crowd of people (everyone except Tom and Edward): It can’t be true. The woman is crazy. It is a mistake. It is future King of England. Edward: Yes. This woman is right. I am the King and Tom is her son. Lord Hertford (comes closer to Edward): How dare you to speak like this about your King. Edward: Look here. (He shows a Royal seal which he has been hiding under Tom’s dirty robes. Lord Hertford places the crown on his head. Tom’s mother hugs her son. Everyone is happy, laughing and congratulating both boys. The final song starts). The end Источник: http://под. ред. О.В.Афанасьевой. 2-е изд. (2000). Мировая классика на английском языке.
