Form 7 The Theme: “HEALTHY WAY OF LIFE” Objectives: To practise the topical vocabulary; To activize speaking, reading, listening and writing skills on the topic; To develop the ability to exercise reproductive and productive speech; To develop the habits of healthy way of life and healthy diet food; To maintain skills of critical thinking; To teach pupils to work in groups; Language material: active vocabulary, proverbs and sayings, the letter, the poem, the dialogues, a list of recommendations, questionnaire, Health Code, the ABC of a Healthy Man. Accessories: IWB, the photos of the sportsmen, cards with tasks. Procedure of the lesson I. Defining the headline of the lesson T: Good afternoon, boys and girls. I’m glad to see you! How are you? What can you say about your spirit? Are you OK now? Then let’s begin our lesson. Today at the lesson we’ll practise the active vocabulary, listen to the letter of the seventh former, who had a problem and we try to solve her problem, then you will complete the dialogues, do the test about the right food, make up a Health Code and at the end of our lesson you are to summarize everything and make up the ABC of a Healthy Man. What is the theme of our lesson? Children, I want you to define the theme of our lesson today. For this purpose I’d like you to answer some questions about the photos on the board (the photos of the sportsmen are given). 1. Whom do you see on the board? 2. What are they doing? 3. Are they healthy? Why? What way of life do they lead? 4. Why do you think we began our lesson with the talk about the sportsmen, about their way of living? T: You are quite right. The theme of our lesson today is “Health and healthy way of life”. II. Warming up. Brainstorming T: Nowadays health is one of the most urgent problems in the world. And keeping health is very necessary for everyone. Why is that so? T: What do you do to keep your health? Do you go in for sport? T: And do you care about your health? Why? T: Do you agree with this proverb? Explain its the meaning. Ps: This proverb means that health is the dearest thing for a person. I think that we can buy many things but we can't buy health. We are to keep our health, lead healthy way of life. T: OK! Now let’s talk about healthy way of life. There are some factors of healthy way of life. What are they? Ps: Exercising, healthy dieting. Healthy lifestyle. Avoiding bad habits. T: Let's speak about bad habits. What are they? Ps: They are: smoking, drinking alcohol, taking drugs. Sleeping too much, or too little. Phisical inactivity. T: I see that you know what bad habits are. Try to avoid them. You will not notice how you will become an addict. III. Auding the letter T: OK. Children, we’ve got a letter from a seventh-former who started smoking. Listen to the letter and be ready to help her solve her problem and give her an advice. a) Listening to the letter My name is N. I am a seventh-former. Not long ago I began to smoke. Certainly on the one hand I know that smoking is dangerous. And I don’t like the taste of cigarettes. But on the other hand my classmates called me names, and I want to look more grown-up than I really am. I think that smoking adds something to my image – I am classy. Well, can you help me to realize what should I do? b) Mini-Discussion. T: What problem does she have? What advice would you give her? Ps: She should understand that smoking causes a bad cough, and in the worst case, lung cancer. She should understand that smoking ruins her health and not only her health but the health of the people around. It would be better if she finds a hobby. She should go in for sports. It is very useful. T: Good. You certainly understand that smoking is the problem not only of one person but the whole society. How is it possible to solve this problem? Ps: Parents and teachers must fight against this problem together. They must explain to the children that they ruin health by smoking. c) Writing the arguments for not smoking. T: Which of the arguments will you use to convince your friends not to smoke? Ps: Dear boys! Don’t smoke, because its smell affects the whole class. Dear friends! Never smoke! It is dangerous for your health. Smoking is a bad habit. Let’s avoid bad habits! T: Of course smoking like any other bad habit is extremely dangerous for your health. Remember: it is easier to start to smoke than to give it up. IV. Valeological Pause. Physical exercises T: And now I think it’s high time to have a break and do some useful physical exercises. PS: To be healthy in your life, Don’t forget to do all five, Get up early, quick and bright, Exercise with all your might. Doctor: Try to get some rest, and be sure to drink lots of water and orange juice. Dialogue 2 Doctor: What is the trouble with you? Paul: I've caught a bad cold. Doctor: How long are you feeling this way? Paul: I've been ill since Monday. Doctor: And you are coughing a lot, aren't you? Paul: Yes. Doctor: Have you taken your temperature? Paul: Yes, I'd taken my temperature before I left home. It was normal. Doctor: Have you a headache or a sore throat? Paul: I have both. Doctor: Have you taken anything for your headache? Paul: I took aspirin. Doctor: Well, I'll examine you. It is not an ordinary cold. You have flu. I'll give you two prescriptions which you must take to the chemist's. If you follow my instructions you will feel better in a few days. If you don't feel better, you will have to call for me. Paul: Thank you, doctor. VI. Relaxation T: Children, before reading the dialogue I want to have a short rest so as to inspire you to our further work. Now sit comfortably. Close your eyes for a moment. Breathe in. Breathe out. You’re quiet. Now open your eyes look around and tell: What do you see? What do you hear? What do you feel? VII. Questionnaire “What Do You Know about Food?” a) T: That’s OK! Look at the board! On the board there is a jumbled proverb. Put the words in a logical order and you’ll have a proverb. (An apple a day keeps a doctor away). Can you explain us the meaning of this proverb. Ps: It says that a person should eat fruit and vegetables every day. They are full of vitamins. And vitamins are very important for our health. All fruit and vegetables are rich with different vitamins. For example, lemons and oranges are rich with vitamin C. I’d like to tell that healthy diet is also good for our health. We should have meals regularly, but we shouldn’t eat too much or too little. T: OK. I quite agree with you. We are what we eat. Try to choose healthy food. Fruit and vegetables are ideal. b) Let’s fill in the questionnaire and realize how much you know about food you eat. 1. How often should we exercise? a) at least 20 minutes once a week; b) at least 20 minutes twice a week; c) at least 20 minutes three times a week. 2. How many portions of fruit and vegetables should you eat every day? a) two; b) three; c) four. 3. A calorie is... a) a type of vitamin; b) a unit of energy; c) a blood cell. 4. Making Health Code T: Thank you for your work. Now I will give you a list of recommendations which we should or shouldn’t do so as to be healthy. Your task is to make Health Code. The first team is to discuss and tell us what we should do and the second team is to tell us what we shouldn’t do to be healthy. 1. Get up early and go to bed early 2. Eat too much 3. Go to bed late 4. Smoke 5. Wash your hands before eating 6. Go in for sports 7. Sleep enough 8. Do morning exercises regularly 9. Eat fruits and vegetables 10. Sleep too much 11. Clean teeth once a day 12. Eat fast food T: Let’s start with the things which we should do. Then the second team will tell us what we shouldn’t do. IX. Summarizing T: I see that you understand that a good health is very important. Let’s summarize all the rules of a good health and make up the ABC of a healthy man. Are you ready? ABC of Healthy Man Alcohol is forbidden! Be calm! Can you balance your emotions? Do morning exercises! Eat right food! Follow adult’s advice! Give up smoking! Hold forth a hope! Idleness is not for you! Join sportive clubs! Keep fit! Laugh extends life! Make the best of life! No drugs! Open windows to air your room! Put right clothes on! Quality of products is important! Relax in tense situation! Sleep not less eight hours a day! Take vitamins! Use any opportunity and resources to be healthy! Visit the doctor regularly! Why not follow a diet! X… Yoga exercises! Zealousness is important for health! X. Reflection a) T: I’m sure now that you understand that good health is above wealth. Have a regular lifestyle. Remember a proverb: “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise”. T: In conclusion I’d like you to tell me what we have done at the lesson today. What have you learnt?
