A long time ago all the animals gathered for an important meeting. They had to decide who would be the first in the zodiac. Each animal thought he was the most useful animal and should be first. First the horse took the floor and said, “I make far places near. People use my strength, drink my milk, and make rope from my hair. I am the most useful animal, so I should be the first in the zodiac.” Next the camel spoke. “If you worked, you did it only so that you would be fed,” he said. “I carried all the heavy things that you could not carry and I never complained that I was hungry. I was happy with anything I found along the way. If there was water, I drank it. If there wasn’t any, I could do without it. I am the most useful animal, so I should be the first in the zodiac.” Then the cow took the floor and said, “If people plough the soil, they do it with my help. They drink my milk and make butter and cheese from it.
