Date: 13.03.2014 Subject: English Grade:7th The theme of the lesson: English speaking countries Teacher: Kussaliyeva Assiya The aims of the lesson: • Educational: to enlarge pupils’ vocabulary on given theme; to understand the culture of English speaking countries; teaching to think critically; to practice using electronic gadgets on the lesson. • Developing: to develop speaking and writing skills. • Bringing up: to bring up accuracy in using grammar and in using electronic gadgets, electronic translator; to bring up critical thinking and being open-minded, to bring up respectful attitude to own country and recognize ways in which Kazakhstan values differ from those in English speaking countries. Keywords: native/official language, custom, tradition, national, commonwealth, population, political parties Proposal results: - Describe political, economic, and social systems of English speaking countries, mostly the UK and the USA. - Know geographical and historical facts about the US and the UK - Research and present information about the US and the UK - to be able to use gadgets and electronic devices on proper way. One, two, three!!! - I hope you are feeling well, and ready to start working. - Let’s see if everyone is here. - …., please, read the RULES OF WORKING during the lesson Use English as often as possible to communicate Be on time to class Keep cell phones on silent mode Be respectful when others are speaking Participate actively in class -students greet teacher and others, too - students take their place and one of them is on duty. -students have little flash-smiles, which identify their mood, they stick them on poster on the wall. -looking at the poster teacher can identify who is absent on the lesson, student on duty helps teacher to name them, teacher register them. -student read it, others listen to him/her very attentively to introduce students criteria of assessment flashcard– “well done!” flashcard– “you are doing good job” flashcard– “work hard and be nice” Each student has his/her own envelope, where he/she collect flashcards 5 minutes Warm – up -A warm-up video called "What do they have in common?" in which.; - there is one map for 2 students, they work in pair. -Hey, guys, so, what do they have in common? - the students have to try and guess the country shown and find them on the map given - students answer the question of teacher, complementing each other Video-material Map of the world 10 minutes Presentation Ask the students to get one piece of paper for their group. Hold the paper horizontally. On the left at the top of the paper, write, “What I know about the US”. On the left at the bottom, write, “What I know about the UK”. Then, on the right side of the paper at the top, write, “What I know about the Canada”. On the right at the bottom, write, “What I know about India”. What I know What I know about the US? about the Canada? What I know What I know about the UK? about India? -teacher observe working students and assess them herself giving them flashcards Students get into groups of 4 people and start filling the paper they have. - Collecting the papers and discuss common ideas with the class - three claps to each group 10 minutes Pre-reading Each student have the text, student on duty help teacher to hand it around. Listening the text. - students look through the text and find bold words in dictionary or they may use electronic dictionary. Student of 1st variant search RED words Student of 2nd variant search BLUE words Then they exchange information they find Students assess each other giving flashcards - in order not to make mistakes while reading new vocabulary and text, students listen it. Oxford dictionary Electronic dictionary Walkman 5 minutes Reading the text Reading: “English speaking countries” English is the third most spoken native language worldwide, after Chinese and Hindi, with some 380 million speakers. It is the official language in 71 sovereign states and territories with the total population of 2,135 million people. Among them are the UK, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Canada, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Africa and many others. They are situated in different parts of the world and differ in many ways. The nature of these countries, their weather and climate and way of life of their people differ. Each country has it's own history customs, traditions, its own national holidays. But they all have a common language. In the UK and the USA there is no law about the official language, and English is the official language there de facto. There are some countries, too, where English is the major language, that is, it is the native language of the overwhelming majority of the population; these countries include the UK, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and some others. The two most important English-speaking countries are, of course, the UK and the USA. The United Kindom of Great Britain and North Ireland consist of 4 parts: England, Scotland, Wales, Northen Ireland. The British Isles are group of islands lying off the noth-west coast of the continent of Europe. There are no high mountains, no very long river, no great forest in U.K. The population of the U.K. is almost fifty-six million. Great Britain is a capitalists country. The USA is situated in the central part of the North American continent. The population of the USA is more then 236 million people. The USA is a highly develoed industrial country. In the USA there are two main political parties, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. Canada has area of nearly 10 million square kilometres. It's westen coast is washed by the Pacific Ocean and its eastern coast by the Atlantic Ocean. The population of Canada is over 26 million people. Canada is a capitalist federal state and a member of the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth of Australia territories are the continent of Australia, the island of Tasmania and number of smaller islands. Australia has an area of nearly eight million square kilometres. The population of Australia is over sixteen million people. The Commonwealth of Australia is a capitalist self- governing federal state. New Zealand is situated south-east of Australia. The country consists of the large islands called North Island, South Island and Stewart Island and also many small islands. The population of New Zealand is over three million people. New Zealand is a capitalist self-governing state and a meember of the Commonwealth - students read the text to each other 1 and 2 paragraphs are read by student with variant 1 3, 4, 5 and 6 paragraphs are read by student with variant 1 - after reading they assess each other. Additional information from “The Society and Culture of Major English Speaking Countries” Books 1 & 2 7 minutes After reading Country Geographical position Population -students fulfill the table and discuss it in pair, then assess each other’s work giving flashcards -representation their table to class 5 minutes Giving home task and reflexion -to learn new vocabulary by heart; - to find as much information about the USA as it’s possible. - according to the flashcards in the envelope teacher assess students’ work during the lesson - Do you like the lesson? What about your feelings? Has it changed? Students count their flashcards and put them into the envelope and pass it to the teacher (student on duty gather them and pass to the teacher) -students show their mood on poster with smiles | |
