Here is the second part of my article about Task Based Teaching and Learning while giving my English club classes. If you read the first part you know that I started to use this approach trying to engage students into the classroom activities, to make classes as useful and interesting as possible. Two weeks had passed since the first TBLT lesson and my students asked me about the contest of the next lesson almost every day. This time I decided to combine two subjects into one interesting class: English and Maths. Our Maths teacher was glad to help me and participate in the new kind of activity for him. I had known that my students of the 8th grade who are participating in my English club lessons are having a very useful Maths theme: “Rational numbers”. Useful because we can use it “on the way to NY”. So, I included the Maths tasks, finished planning and here is what we finally had. The desks in the classroom are rearranged the way the seats are placed in the bus. I printed a big picture of double-decker and attached it to the desks. When my students entered the room they were shocked because the bus looked real but a little smaller. They were standing and waiting for the continuation: -Good morning, my dear! Today we are going to continue our trip to NY. Last time we went out of the airport, let’s look around. (The video starts on the interactive board, showing the sunny day, lots of people of different nationalities, with different skin colour) - Guys, what will we do next? Where are we going to go? What do you want to see? (The answers didn’t take too long to wait for them. My students wanted to see Time square, Statue of Liberty and lots of other places. Some of them wanted to go to McDonald’s because they had never been there before.) - Now, how do we get to Time Square? - By bus. - Who knows how to buy a ticket? (We had a student selling the tickets in front of the bus) - How much is the ticket?-asked one of the students of my group. - It is a dollar for a mile depending on where you need to go. (Here we have the first Maths task. The students knowing that it is about 25 miles need to count how much money will the ticket cost and compare it with how much money they have) - It is a dollar per mile, 25 times 1 is 25$. We have 100$ for our trip for each person, so it is 50$ for the bus round trip and 50$ more to eat smth and visit some places. - Good job!- I said. (Everyone got into the line to buy a ticket. We had a hundred dollar bill for each person . A cashier gave us a ticket and change, wished us a good trip and we took our seats in the bus) - How long will be the trip?- asked one of the students the bus driver. - Depending on the traffic it can take from an hour to two. (On the way I was showing the students some pictures of New York and telling of what we would see today, students were impatient and trying to jump off the bus to see the places they saw in films and wanted to visit) Finally the bus stopped and my students saw the sign on the board saying Port Authority. - I thought we will come to Time Square,-said one of the boys. - We are really close but the busses come to the bus station. We said Good Bye to the bus driver and moved o Time Square. I printed some pictures of the bright shops with souvenirs and other Chinese stuff, then the famous fashion brand shops. My students wanted to take some pictures predicting how they will brag to their friends that they’ve been to NY. After about 10 minutes of doing this my students wanted to see the Statue of Liberty. We came up to the ticket office and asked for the ship to the Liberty Island. As it turned out some of my students didn’t even know that the Statue of Liberty is situated on the island. We bought the group ticket for 5$ each.(second Maths task) - Can we get a ticket to the Liberty Island?-asked one of my students a cashier. - Sure, it is 50$ each. - Wow, we have just 50$ left for each person. Can we get a discount because here are many of us? - All right. We have group tickets. They cost 5$each but you will have to stand all the time. Is it fine? - Sure. We bought the tickets and went on board the ship. My students decided to buy the crown the Statue of Liberty had. It looked funny, seemed there were lots Statue of Liberty babies around. The trip started and I turned on the video which was made by me being on that ship where I showed everything around and expressed my emotions. - Lots of students take pictures being on the island. Do you want to take one with the flag of Kazakhstan? - Sure…Let’s do it. After this fun time activity all of us were starving and we decided to go eat smth. But it is another class. My students were given the task to bring certain food and drinks for the next time. This class was really emotional; my students agreed that the time of it flew away. I saw my students facing the realities of New York, getting cultural experience and breaking the language barrier. We will keep working and having fun while our TBLT classes. To be continued... | |
