Theme: “Scale of Cheating” Goals: Educational: systematizing of students’ lexical and speaking habits through reading. Communicative: exchanging opinions about the content of the text and own students’ experience. Breeding: confirmation of students’ own attitude to cheating. Competence-based: reasoning of own experience. Tasks: to activate Lexis; to extend text working skills; to develop skills of rendering own opinion and accept smb’s point of view; to make self-estimation of work. Aids: cards with text, a board, a marker, self-rating cards. Procedure of the Lesson. I. Greeting teacher’s words. Goals of the Lesson. Hello, dear students! Today at the lesson we’ll speak about cheating, read the text and speak about it’s main idea. You’ll express your own attitude to the problem of the text and share your ideas on solving it. II. Warming up: Composing a Cluster. I’d like you to write as many kinds of cheating as you know. For example: Cheating at the lesson III. Brainstorming: Please, answer my questions: What is cheating? Have you ever cheated? Is it good or bad to cheat? Why? IV. Reading: While reading the text, please, pay attention to the questions, given after the text. THE WISE SULTAN Once upon a time there lived a very clever sultan. He was proud of two things – his wealth and his wisdom. One day the sultan called together his ten goldsmiths and ordered them to make ten coins each. Each coin was to weigh exactly ten grams of pure gold. All the goldsmiths did their best to please the sultan but one of them decided to cheat him. That goldsmith made all his ten coins one gram short. The sultan heard that one of the ten goldsmiths had cheated him but he couldn’t catch him red-handed, so he invented a clever trick. He called the ten goldsmiths together and asked them to bring their coins. Then he took his scales and weighed together a certain number of coins from each of the smiths only once and found their weight to be 540 grams. This was enough for him to find out which one of the goldsmiths had cheated him. How did the sultan find out who the cheat was? 1. Comprehension Try to answer the following questions: 1. How many goldsmiths were there? 2. How many of them were cheats? 3. The cheat, like the others, made ten coins. How many grams short was each coin? 4. Did the sultan find the cheat: a) By looking each man in the eye, b) By weighing the coins, c) By asking his servants? 5. How many times did he weigh the coins? 6. Did he take the coins to weigh from: a) One goldsmith, b) Some of the goldsmiths, c) All of them? 7. Suppose he had taken all ten coins from each smith and put them together on the scales. When he weighed them, how many grams short would they have been? 8. Would he have known that one of the smiths had cheated? 9. Would he have known which smith had cheated? 10. Suppose he took one coin from the fist smith, two from the second and three from the third, how many would he take from the others? 11. How many coins would that be altogether? 12. If nobody had cheated, what should the total weight of these coins have been: a) 500 gr b) 550 gr c) 600 gr 13. How much did the coins he put on the scales actually weigh? 14. So how many of the coins on the scale were made by the cheat? 15. Who was the cheat? 2. Solution Can you explain how the wise sultan found out which of the ten goldsmiths was the cheat? What trick did he invent? 3. Prediction The sultan found out who the cheat was. What do you think will happen to the cheat? Will he be thrown into prison? Executed? Sent to another country? Forgiven? 5. Discussion Is there a scale of cheating? What do you think of: cheating in an exam? cheating at cards? travelling on a train without a ticket? taking things from shops without paying for them? buying a dissertation to get an academic degree? What other forms of dishonesty do you know? Are all of them equally bad for you or are some of them worse than others? V. Homework: Write five sentences to render the text. VI.
