The dramatic Highlands with their snow –capped mountains, wooded glens and shining lochs gradually give way to the meandering salmon rivers, rich farmlands and picturesque villages of the Lowlands. This is the land of tartans and fine malt whisky, of romantic castles and the haunting melodies of bagpipes. Scotland also has a rich cultural heritage. P2: The 19th- century scholar and educationalist J.S. Blackie summed up Burns importance to Scotland and the words: ,,When Scotland forgets Burns, then history forgets Scotland.” R. Burns has been a landmark in Scotland’s national history and identity. The ploughman poet, the national bard, the man of the people, the lover of the good life, are only a few of the characteristics that have been attributed to Burns, who is definitely the best Scottish poet, Admired not only for his fascinating work , but also for his extraordinary life. Вurns: Oh, me love is like a red, red rose, That’s newly sprung in June, Oh, my love is like a melody, That’s sweetly played in tune. Jean: And fare thee weel my only love! And fare thee weel a while. And I will come again, my love, Tho it were ten thousand mile. Burns: I was born on the 25th of January in 1759, in south- western Scotland. My father William Burns was a farmer. There were seven children in the family, we lived in poverty. 1. On January 25, 1759, Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet, was born. In small village named Alloway R. Burns spent the first seven years of his life, listening to his mother’s old Scottish songs about devils, ghosts and witches. Robert and his brother Gilbert went to the local school. The two little boys had to do a man’s work, helping their father. And very often Robert composed his poems and songs when going behind the plough driven by oxen. His first love song was dedicated to Nell, a country girl, who helped them in the field: Once I loved a bonny lass, And, oh, I love her still. She dresses, eye, so clean and neat Both decent and genteel; But there is something in her gait Makes any dress look weel. (bonny lass = pretty girl; gait = walk; weel = well – Scot. Dial.) 2 P7: It is interesting to note that, at fourteen, Burns had already decided to write his poetry in the Scottish dialect . Yet ev’n the ha’folk fill their pechan We’ sauce, ragout’ an’ sic like trashtrie’ That’s little short o’downright wastrie. Ah’ what poor cot-folk pit their painch in’ I own it’s past my comprehension P8: Robert Burns started writing poems at the age of seventeen. He composed verses to the melodies of old folk –songs, which he had admitted from his early childhood. Poet’s talent remained obvious and by his mid 20-s , he was a real poet and songwriter in his native Scottish dialect. The poem ,,Mally’s Meek is one of them. 3. He read manuals on farming, went to markets, asked advice from the old farmers, but farming again failed him. And he beсame known among the neighbors “as a maker of rhymes”. His songs were sung in all the neighbor’s houses. Handwritten copies of his poems had been going around. THE PARSON’S LOOKS That there is falsehood in his looks I must and will deny; They say their master is a knave – And sure they do not lie And now tho’ I must beg, with a wooden arm and leg And many a tattered rag hanging over my bum I’m as happy with my wallet and my callet As when I used in scarlet to follow a drum. 4. P9: Young poet expressed the feelings of love in some lyrical poems and they are still remembered today.(учащаяся читает стихотворение,,Coming through the rye.”) P10: The talented poet was a true son of the Scottish peasantry. His poems embody their thoughts and aspirations , their human dignity, their love of freedom. Burns sang of the woods fields, wonderful valleys of Scotland, many verses were composed to the old folk –melodies or later set to music, and are popular as songs all over the world.(учащийся читает стихотворение ,,The Birks of Aberfeldie.’’) P11: Robert had fallen in love with Jean Armour and was going to marry her, but the girl’s father did not want to have a poor peasant for his son-in-law. The fact that young people loved each other did not alter his intention to marry Jean to a rich man. They parted for a while.(Звучит песня в исполнении группы мальчиков ,,Because of you’’.) Only , when Robert obtained a job, earned money, Jean’s father agreed to have the poet as his son-in-law. (Звучит песня ,,For The Sake Of Somebody’’, в сопровождении гитары.) Burns:«…a shopkeeper whom I owe a large sum of money took a proceeding against me. All that remains of me – bones and skin – they would surely throw into prison. Can you do me a favour and send me ten pounds? Oh James, if you knew my proud heart you would know how I feel. I am not accustomed to beg. Save me from the terror of prison» Jean: Hard work had destroyed my husband’s health, but he continued the literary work. We lived in poverty, our farm was sold,. The problem of earning money raised every day. 5 P12: “A Winter Night” , ,,The Winter of life’’ are the saddest, most bitter and moving poems he had ever written (a few days before his death). You banks and slopes of bonnie Doon How can you bloom so fresh and fair! How can you sing, you little birds, And I so weary, full of care! (Звучит стихотворение ,, ,,The Winter of life.’’) Robert Burns died on July 21, 1796. Thousands from all over the country followed him through the streets of Dumfries to his last resting-place. P13: After poet’s death , his friends started the ritual of the Burn’s night which has remained largely unchanged today, celebrating his memory and keeping his legend alive.
