M., E.L. teacher, Specialized secondary school #2 Aktobe, Kazakhstan The objectives of the lesson: 1. to teach the students to use the idioms in studied patterns 2. to develop unprepared speech habits, to provide the students with opportunity to use active lexis in a new context 3. to teach the students to respect other people’s point of view. Technical and visual aids: cards, pictures. The Procedure: 1 Organization moment. To introduce the objectives of the lesson to the students The teacher: Good morning, everybody. I’m glad to see you here. How are you? Today our lesson is devoted to the idioms. We have a lot of tasks to fulfill. But first of all we shall divide into 4 groups. 2 The definition of the Idioms. The question is – what is an idiom? The answer is – it is an expression that takes existing words, combines them in a new sense and brings forth a new expression. 3 To provide that the students have a clear idea about the definition of an idiom they must do the following exercise. (card 1) Read and find the sentences with the idioms: (work in groups) This house is far cry from where we used to live Isn’t nearly as nice as Is very different from Isn’t a patch on A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since we last met I’ve become much more successful So much has happened I’ve gone up in the world After just six month’s trading, went down the drain My uncle’s business became very successful Went bankrupt Hit the jackpot His name was on the tip of my tongue but I have such a terrible His name rings a bell memory. I’ll remember his name in a minute 4 The Idioms about dogs. a) There are a lot of idioms on different themes, especially animals. Today we shall learn some idioms about dogs. The task is to match the English idioms with the Russian equivalents: (cards) Every dog is a lion at home Не буди лихо, пока сидит тихо Every dog has its day По заслугам и честь An old dog will learn no new tricks Собака лает – ветер носит A good dog deserves a good bone Всяк кулик в своем болоте велик The dog barks but caravan goes Собака на сене A dog in the manger Будет и на нашей улице праздник Get sleeping dogs lie Старого пса к цепи не приучишь b) Mime staging The task is to do mime staging of the idioms in groups, the rest must guess the idiom. 5 The Idioms and their definitions a) The task is to read the idioms and their definitions (cards) all thumbs - awkward, especially with one’s hands, clumsy be on target – to achieve a desired goal butt in – to interfere in other people’s business cone out of one’s shell – to stop being shy to cook up – to plan and organize, to invent dead to the world – fast asleep flat broke – having no money get the message – to understand clearly what is meant green thumb – talent for gardening hit the jackpot, hit the nail – to be lucky or successful on the head – to get something exactly right in the chips – rich, having plenty of money lucky dog – a very fortunate person to pop the question – to ask someone to marry one puppy love – the first love of very young b) The game “Guess the Idiom”. The cards with the idioms are stuck on the backs of the participants. They try to guess the idiom asking the questions: e.g. “What idiom have I got? Please give the definition” The other student gives the definition. E.g. “A very fortunate person” – “Oh, I know, my idiom is – Lucky dog”, etc. 6 Complete the sentences. The teacher: My favourite idiom is “Lucky Dog”. I want you to complete the sentences using this idiom. 1 You lucky dog! How did you manage to….? 2 Joe certainly is a lucky dog. He won…. 3 My friend, Laura, is a lucky dog. She is going to marry…. 4 What lucky dog owns that new….in the parking lot? 7The next task is to describe the way you intend to pop the question or show it. ( group – work) 8 Make up dialogues using the idioms. | |
