Aims: - to give practice in listening, speaking and comparing differences between town and country; - to develop pupils speaking; - to broaden pupil’s outlook. Equipment: cassette, postcards. Procedure I. Warming up. Teacher: Hello, dear boys and girls, guests. Welcome to our lesson “Town and country”. And I am very glad to see you here! Pupils : We are glad to see you too. Teacher: Today we have special lesson. We`ll speak about town and country, compare them and then we`ll know your opinions where would you like to live. Now, first task is to match the opposite adjectives. 1) noisy a) polluted 2) expensive b) lively 3) boring c) dirty 4) clean d) unfriendly 5) friendly e) peaceful 6) unpolluted f) cheap Answers: 1-e, 2- f, 3-b, 4-c, 5-d , 6-a II. Listening Teacher: Now we`ll listen to three people and places where they prefer to live then you have to match the texts to the correct people. Pupil 1: 1c. Johnny wants to live in countryside. He doesn’t often go to the clubs and shops in town, because they`re too expensive. He prefers places where he can run. In future he`ll move and commute to work in the city. Pupil 2: 2a. Storm loves the countryside… just to visit, but she thinks it`s a boring place to live. She`s lived in London since she was born. She likes the noise and the action. There`s always something to do- music, films, shopping or just hanging out. She knows it`s a very polluted and it`s a really expensive to go out but it feels like her city. Pupil 3: 3b. Uncle Ed grew up in the country. His father worked on a farm but he had to move to the city when he was ten. He missed the farm, the birds, the animals and the fields. He said it was such a polluted city and there was a lot of vandalism and crime. He hasn’t lived in the city for fifteen years and he isn’t going back. III. Vocabulary work. Teacher: Well done, you`ve found correct people. Now let`s talk about transport, places and facilities and description of town or country. At the next task you have to complete the words in the missed gaps. Descriptions: n_ _ _y, polluted, p_ _ _ _f_ l, ex_ _ _s_ _e, clean, s_ _ l_ y, d_ _ t_, f_ _ _ _d_ y. Pl aces and facilities: s_ _ _ _m_ _k_ _, h_ _ _i_ _ l, f_ _to_ _, park, c_ ub, c_ _e__, fields, f_r_. Transport: to c_ _m_ _e, t_ _f_ _ _ jam, to d_ _v_ , bus, t_ _m. Answers: Places and facilities: supermarket, hospital, factory, club, cinema, farm. Descriptions: noisy, peaceful, expensive, smelly, dirty, friendly. Transport: to commute, traffic jam, to drive, tram. IV. Speaking. Teacher: Now, children which of these descriptions, places or transport you can see in town , country. The next task is to find differences and similarities of town and country. Pupil 4: I want to tell their differences. In country we can see hospital, farm where a lot of animals , club, fields and school. And we can see car, bus In the country. I think country is boring, unpolluted, friendly, cheap, peaceful. Pupil 5: I`ll continue speaking about their differences. In town we can see shops, school, cafes, factories, cinemas, parks in the towns. From transport we can see car, bus, tram. As for me towns are lively, noisy, smelly, polluted, expensive and there are a lot of crimes and vandalisms. Teacher: And who wants to tell their similarities? Pupil 6: I want. I think both of them have parks, cinemas, hospitals, schools. We can see car and bus in town and country. And I think they are friendly. V. Comparative adjectives. Teacher: Thank you, you`ve worked very well. Now let`s do the next exercise. Here you should choose the correct comparative adjectives. 1. Country is (more expensive, cheaper) than town. 2. Town is (noisier, more peaceful) than country. 3. Country (is, isn`t) as clean as town. 4. Town is (more boring, livelier) than country. 5. Country (is, isn`t) as friendly as town. Answers: 1) more expensive; 2)more peaceful; 3) isn`t; 4) livelier; 5) is. Teacher: Ok, children. We`ve talked about town and country, compare them. And now I want to know your opinions. Where would you like to live? Let`s divide into two teams and discuss where it`s better to live. (Students are divided into two teams and discuss). VI. Giving homework. Teacher: Children, your home work is to write an essay “I`d like to live in country (town), because…” VII. Giving feedback. Teacher: Thank you for the lesson. You were very active today.
