Aims: 1. A raising pupils’ knowledge about Great Britain and the USA. 2. Development of skills in reading, talking and abilities to express their own opinion. 3. Brining-up the pupils’ desire to know more about different countries especially about Great Britain and the USA and be proud of our country. Visual aids: slides with English proverbs, puzzles, cards with poems and questions and tasks, pictures of flags, a poster with slogan “Learn English and you will be lucky!” There are 3 teams which consist from 6 pupils. They have to devise the team’s name and choose the captain of the team. Procedure of the game: 1. Meeting and greeting the teams. 2. Brainstorming. (questions about school). 3. Translating the English proverbs and giving their Russian meaning. 4. Describing pictures. 5. Guessing puzzles. 6. Answering the questions about Great Britain, Republic of Kazakhstan and their capitals. 7. Reading dialogues and acting them. Teachers: Good afternoon, everybody! We are happy to see you at our game “Who knows more?” The game will pass as a competition between three teams. Let me introduce you the juries of our competition. You know them. They are teachers of our school. We are sure you’ve read a lot of books and got useful information about the English speaking coun-tries. This competition will show your achievements and your knowledge of the matter. We wish you success. Be active, honest, industrious and helpful and you’ll be sure to win. Now it’s time to introduce yourselves. I want the captains to come over and introduce your team. 1. Introduction of the teams and captains. 2. Brainstorming. (questions about school). Teacher: Listen to my questions and answer them. The right answer is one point. The 1st team 1. What school do you study in? (N. Ostrovsky secondary school) 2. What foreign language do you study at school? (English) 3. How many pupils are in your form? (20 or 23) 4. Do you like to read English texts? (Yes, I do. No, I don’t.) The 2nd team 1. How many lessons do you have every day? (5 or 6) 2. Who is the headmaster of your school? (Shkoda Z.N.) 3. What do you like to do at the English lesson? (to sing a song, to read, to translate) 4. Where is your school situated? (It’s situated in the center of the village.) The 3rd team 1. Who is your class teacher? (Names of the class teachers.) 2. What is the most difficult subject for you? (Math, Geography, Biology…) 3. How many floors does your school consist from? (3 floors.) 4. Who is your English teacher? (Names of the English teachers.) 3. Translating the English proverbs and giving their Russian meaning. Teacher: Every country and nationality has their own traditions, customs and of course the prov-erbs. And the most of them has the same meaning in different countries. Now let’s see how our par-ticipants know the proverbs. The right answer is one point. Look at the board, there are English proverbs. 1. East or west home is best.(В гостях хорошо, а дома лучше.) 2. Live and learn. (Век-живи, век-учись.) 3. An hour in the morning is worth two in the evening.(Утро вечера мудренее.) 4. Better late than never. (Лучше поздно, чем никогда.) 5. As clever as day.(Ясно как день.) 6. A good beginning makes a good ending.(Лиха беда начало). 7. As welcome as flowers in May.(Такой же желанный как цветы в мае). 8. Everything is good in its season.(Все хорошо в свое время.) 9. Everything comes to him who waits.(Терпение и труд все перетрут). 10. All is well that ends well.(Все хорошо, что хорошо кончается). 11. Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.(Не откладывай на завтра то, что можно сделать сегодня). 12. A good name is better than riches.(Добрая слава лучше богатства). 13. Speech is silver but silence is gold.(Молчанье-золото). 14. Make hay while the sun shines. (Коси коса пока роса). 15. Promise little but do much.(Меньше слов, больше дела). What is the historical center of government? (Westminster). 8. What is the West End? (The richest and most beautiful part). 9. What is the famous street in London? (Oxford Street). 10. What is the poorest part of London? (The East End). Card3. Astana. 1. What is the first name of Astana? (Akmola). 2. When was Akmola founded? (In 1830). 3. What town was Akmola renamed into? (Tselinograd). 4. What countries did merchants gather to sell cattle and agricultural products from? (Kazakh-stan, China, Russia, India, Central Asia). 5. Where is Astana situated? (In central part). 7. What is the official language in Kazakhstan? (Kazakh). 8. What are the main rivers? (Irtish, Illi, Ural, SyrDarya). 9. What is the climate in Kazakhstan? (Strongly continental). 10. What does Kazakhstan have as a sovereign state? (The national flag, anthem, national tradi-tions and holidays). 7. Reading dialogues and acting out them. Teacher: And the last task is to read and act out the dialogue. I’ll give you a sheet of paper with a joke dialogue and you should act it out. 1. “Does the dog know?” “Don’t be afraid of the dog”, a woman says to the postman. “Do you know the old proverb: “A barking dog does not bite”?” “Yes, madam, I know the proverb and you know it. But does the dog know it?” 2. “The first eight lesson”. A young man wants to study English. He goes to the English teacher and asks: “Is it difficult to study English?” “No, it is not difficult,” answers the teacher. “Only the first eight lessons are difficult”. “Then,” says the young man, “I want to begin with lesson nine.” 3. “She doesn’t know English.” Teacher: Your Russian exercises are better than your English exercises. Pupil: That is because my mother does not know English. The conclusion of the competition. Teacher: Dear friend! It’s a pity but our competition has just friend. Thank you for your coming and taking and taking an active part in our game. You are really bright and industrious. You can do different kinds of work. You know a lot about English speaking countries and can tell about our country in English. And we are sure that your good knowledge of English will help you in your fu-ture life.
