Form 3 Contest – Travelling “How well do you know animals?” Teachers: Andronova T. Y. Starchekova Y. S. Theme: Animals Overview and purpose: pupils will demonstrate knowledge of the theme “Animals” Educational aims: revise grammar material (Degrees of comparison of adjectives), consolidate words on the theme “Animals” Communicative and Developing aims: develop skills of communication; writing, reading and listening skills Educative aims: bring up interest to the English language and love to animals, teach students to work in teams Materials: cards and pictures, tape, computer, fishing rods Procedure of the contest: I Introduction T: Good afternoon, dear pupils and guests. Glad to see you! You are welcome to our contest “How well do you know animals?” We have two teams today. Our magic English train will take us to different stations. II Warming up. T: It’s much more interesting to travel with the song. So, will you, please, sing the beautiful song of The Beatles “Hello, Goodbye!” 1. You say “Yes”, I say “No.” You say “Stop” and I say “Go, go, go.” Oh, no! You say “Goodbye!” I say “Hello, hello, hello.” I don’t know why you say “Goodbye!” I say “Hello, hello, hello.” I don’t know why you say “Goodbye!” I say “Hello.” 2. You say “High”, I say “Low.” You say “Why” and I say “I don’t know.” Oh, no! You say “Goodbye!” I say “Hello, hello, hello.” I don’t know why you say “Goodbye!” I say “Hello, hello, hello.” I don’t know why you say “Goodbye!” I say “Hello.” III Lexical Practice “Theatre of pantomime” 1) T: Our first station is the “Theatre of pantomime” You get pictures (or cards with names) of different kinds of animals. Be so kind to show your animal so that other pupils can guess and name it. (Cards: monkey, dog, tiger, bear, camel, penguin) 2) T: The second station is called “Enchanted Animals”. Will you put down the mixed letters in the right order and read the names of the enchanted animals, thus, breaking the spell? 1) god 2) noil 3) gerti 4) nomeky 5) omuse 6) reab (Keys: dog, lion, tiger, monkey, mouse, bear) IV Listening practice T: You are at the station “Riddle contest”. The station “Who is the first? Piff - Puff” T: The fourth station is called “Who is the first? Piff - Puff”. Four pupils from each group are welcome. Stand in lines and face each other. You will be interpreters. Try to translate the word quicker than your classmate. Then say “Piff - Puff”. Buratino suggests us to match the adjectives and characters of our fairy - tales and names of animals: Beautiful Puff-the Ball Friendly stepmother Horrible Cinderella Funny Goat Big monkey Guy Small dolphin Clever mouse (Keys: beautiful Cinderella, friendly Puff-the Ball, horrible stepmother, funny monkey Guy, Big Goat, small mouse, clever dolphin) VI Relaxation T: Children, are you tired? Our station is called “Music Pause”. Let’s sing and do exercises. (Song “Head and shoulders) Head and shoulders, Knees and toes, Knees and toes. Head and shoulders, Knees and toes, Knees and toes. VII Listening and grammar practice T: Now we are at the station “Artists and Funny Pictures” Be ready to draw a picture, listening to my instructions. Don’t forget to take a piece of paper and a pencil. 1) Please, in the middle of the paper draw a big circle (apple). 2) Then on the circle draw a smaller circle. 3) Then on the second circle draw two round ears. 4) In the small circle draw two eyes, a round nose and a mouth. 5) Then draw arms, hands, legs and feet. The picture is ready. What animal have you got? (a bear) VIII Grammar practice. 1) The station “Fishing” T: Our train has just stopped in front of the beautiful river. It’s time to go fishing. Please, compare fish and animals you’ll catch. (E.g. The first fish is beautiful The second fish is more beautiful The third fish is the most beautiful) Big, small, short, long, nice, fine, tasty, clever (frog), funny, strong, good, bad, interesting, old (tortoise), favourite, beautiful. 2) The station “Different animals” T: Our magic train is at the station “Different animals”. Will you compare different animals? 1) Dogs are (clever) than cats. 2) Monkeys are (funny) than lions. 3) The giraffe has got the (long) neck. 4) The tiger is the (big) of all cats. 5) A horse is (beautiful) than a cow. 6) Crocodile’s tail is (long) than bear’s. (Keys: cleverer, funnier, the longest, biggest, more beautiful, longer) IX Speaking practice. The station “Return things to the fairy- tales” 1) T: At this train stop we can see some lost magic things from the well-known fairy- tales. Let’s help to return things to the fairy- tales. Remember the titles of the fairy- tales and name them. (Pictures: bananas, the crystal shoe, a long stick, the Red Riding Hood) (Keys: Bananas are from the fairy - tale “Guy”. A long stick is from the fairy - tale “The Story of the Three Goats. The Red Riding Hood is from the fairy- tale “Little Red Riding Hood”. The crystal shoe is from the fairy- tale “Cinderella”.) 2) The station “Food for animals” T: It’s time to feed animals. What animals like to eat...? bananas meat leaves fish grass “Surprise” T: Boys and girls, we have guests from the fairy – tale “Little Red Riding Hood” today. Let’s meet them.
